Did this shoot last week for SurfMonk which is based out of Malibu, CA. A simple shoot with some of the new products they came out with. Super amped on the SurfMonk's products because it made out of Bamboo. Bamboo is Nature's most sustainable resource, grown without
pesticides or chemicals. It's commonly known that bamboo can thrive naturally without any pesticides.

Guest Blog - My Photo Assistant - Kyle Sparks

I wanted to do a guest blog with my assistant Kyle Sparks. He was been working with me on most of my projects. I love this story he did so thought I would share it with you guys check it out.

Residents of Koroipita
Many people fail to realize that Fiji is not just great surf, five star beach resorts, clear warm water, and white sand beaches without a single grain of sand out of place. The truth is that Fiji is still a third world country and even though it contains hundreds of pristine tropical islands, one does not have to look far to see the face of hunger and poverty. In 1985 a group of Australian rotary members, lead by Peter Drysdale, realized this problem and decided to take action by creating the Koroipita project.
In the Fijian language “Koroipita” means village of Peter. Koroipita is a small village outside of Lautoka on the main island of Fiji, Viti Levu. The project was established to help local Fijians and Indian Fijians get out of the slums of Fiji and into homes complete with a kitchen house, a bathroom, electricity, and clean running water. Currently Koroipita has over eighty homes, a kindergarten, a small store, a large kitchen area, and a community meeting area. In the near future Peter will undertake the second stage of construction called K2. K2 will add more homes and a large warehouse style building for volunteers to stay at when they are helping during the building process.
Residents of Koroipita is an in-depth portrait series focusing on the villagers who thrive in Koroipita. The images in this series tell the unique stories through personal environmental portraits.

Guest Blog - Niki's My Hairstylist

LinkI have been friends with Niki for ever and now we are working together on photo shoots. She will be doing must of my hair for the next couple of shoots. So if you need a great hair stylist hit up Niki. Click on her blog Niki

Niki's Write Up
Becoming obsessed with hair at a very young age my Saturdays consisted of styling my friends hair and tearing through every magazine desperately trying to recreate the looks that inspired me. During this time I decided I wanted to become a hairstylist and pursue this path for my career. I began studying cosmetology at Santa Monica College. From there I began working at Chris McMillan salon under well-known stylist, Kristoff Ball. Working in a salon atmosphere was fun and exciting and I was grateful to have this incredible opportunity to work under and be trained by one of the best in the business. Currently I have been working privately; styling hair for a variety of clients including photo shoots with a wide range of projects giving me this wonderful opportunity to show my creativity and skills.

Currently I am working for John Hildebrand, a well-known and respected photographer here in Malibu. John prides himself in creating a unique atmosphere. John fires off ideas that ignite my passion as a hairstylist allowing my ideas and vision to come alive. John has amazing talent, a creative mind with humor to go along with it. From my first time working with John he made me feel like I had been doing this my entire life, that’s what kind of personality he has, which is hard to find. John’s creations tell you everything you need to know about the pride and passion he puts into his art. Working with John I’ve learned to distinguish my abilities, and exert my talent. It has truly been an honor working with John. Once a week I will be a guest on his blog updating you with styles I’m working on, what inspires me, and everything that goes on behind the scenes! I can't wait to shoot this week!!!!

Just started working with my new stylist read what she is all about below.

Hi! This is Clary’s Closet, and we’re going to be here every week on John’s blog bring you guys the latest and greatest fashion updates and news. We are super excited to be teaming up with John for an amazing calendar photo shoot. We’ve been working really hard for the last few weeks on the concepts and styling for this calendar, which we are shooting next week! Stay tuned because we will be bringing you some super exclusive behind the scenes pictures of our shoot, which will give you a little insight into what it takes to make a shoot like this happen, as well as some probably super funny and random moments of our team behind the scenes.
Here at Clary’s Closet we feature a hand picked selection of high-end designer clothing, shoes, handbags, and accessories! In addition, we also feature high-end designer children's clothing and accessories, all totally fabulous brands and in brand-new or hardly worn condition. Clary's Closet began 3 years ago when stylist, Clary Mendez (a super hard working young Malibu mom of 3 – all 3 kids under 3 and still in diapers!!!) came up with a genius idea!! She decided to go through the closets of her friends, family, and associates in the fashion world and handpick a selection of fabulous items that weren't being used or had hardly ever/never been worn. We take those items and make them available to all of you fashion addicts/fashionistas to enjoy! We all know what a pricey task it is to keep up with all of the amazingness that the world of fashion has to offer, and at a time like this, Clary's Closet has developed the ideal way for people to still be able to fill their closets full of all of those super luxe designer items!! Clary's keen sense of fashion and fabulous sense of style started back in her childhood, where she always knew what to wear, what not to wear, and how to turn any outfit from normal to totally fabulous!! That killer instinct for fashion only grew as time went on, and she became a fashion stylist for magazines & countless celebrities. Watching all of this amazing clothing and accessories hardly be used or worn, and building relationships with people behind the scenes of the fashion world, Clary has developed a select clientele who make Clary's Closet possible. She hand selects insanely fabulous high end designer items and totally rare finds- ranging from unique, one of a kind vintage pieces to this seasons designer must-haves that are still on the shelves and being sold in the stores now! Clary's sense of style and natural eye for fashion are what make this business thrive, and Clary's Closet gives everyone the chance to own absolutely insane designer items without having to pay the absolutely insane designer price tags! All of the items you will find at Clary's Closet are absolutely, undoubtedly 100% authentic, guaranteed!! Many of our items are available for sale on eBay at, and are also at the moment being featured at the fabulous store Revolution Malibu!!! (29575 Pacific Coast Highway – Under Spruzzo’s & right by Clout!) You can also check them out online at They are a totally original and one of a kind store that features tons of super cool vintage items, all pimped out with studs and rhinestones and tons of amazing extras. They also have an awesome selection of handmade jewelry and super rad home décor!!! And now, due to the recent collaboration with Clary’s Closet, Revolution Malibu will be the first and only store in Malibu to feature highly coveted super luxe designer & vintage items!! We are really excited to be teaming up with Revolution, so be sure to go by there and check out the super exclusive racks of “Couture Rocks by Clary’s Closet”!!

Photography Guest Blog - Joe Hamilton Photography "Road Trip"

From time to time I going to feature a guest on my blog. Going to have other photographers, make up artist, clothing stylist and hair stylist show us their work and also give some tips.
Stay Tuned.

First and foremost I would like to thank John for allowing me to be a guest on his blog. My name is Joe Hamilton and I am a freelance photographer based out of Oceanside, CA. John has recently asked me to discuss my road trip I took over Easter weekend. Took a drive out to beautiful Calexico, CA with my girlfriend Michele to visit her grandparents, two of the coolest grandparents I have ever met. Had a really nice visit with them and took some great photos along the way.

Road trips are a perfect time for scouting out new locations and trying out new gear. On this trip I brought along a new HonlPhoto kit purchased here:
For the price it is not a bad package if you put it to use. The gels came in handy when we came across this burnt down abandoned farm house. After envisioning the creative potential with this place I discussed coming back soon with John to collaborate on a shoot. Possibly we could blog about that if we knock that project out..
Above photo info – Shot @ f8, ISO 200, 56.00 S, 17-85mm@17mm. Shooting with a Canon 20D I wanted to keep the ISO relatively low to reduce noise in the image. Camera placed on manual on a tri-pod @ f8 for a good depth of field, timer placed to “bulb” to achieve 56.00 seconds and have enough time to paint the entire scene, triggered with remote. I used a Canon 580exII with a “Rosco Roscolux Primary Blue” gel for the blue effect and a Canon 420ex with a Rosco Roscolux Light Red gel for red behind the house, these gels come in the kit. During the 56.00 second exposure the blue flash was fired off 6 times throughout the room and the red was fired off 3 times outside the back window. Finalized with a few adjustments in PhotoShop.

On the way back home we made a few stops and came across this crazy layout in the middle of nowhere, we were glad we stopped. Under this bridge we found stick like figures covered in ragged clothing. Most likely belonging to immigrants on their journey to freedom and picked up by border patrol and leaving behind excess clothing. Somebody took the time to set these up, so I took the time to try and capture a couple of good photos. Both images were shot @ f11 and bracketed by 2 stops converted to HDR through Photomatix.

All in all had a good time, got some good photos, found some cool new locations and learned a few new tricks. Road trips can be a 5 minute drive to a local beach or a trip around the world. Bottom line is, if you enjoy photography get out there with a friend or family member who also enjoy photography and explore, you never know what you may find.

Thanks for your time and check out my web site whenever you have a chance. If you have any questions on photos taken do not hesitate to send me an email, I am more than happy to share info. And thanks again to John for a little spotlight on his blog.

Max Musina Product Shots

Max Musina who just happens to live next door to me in Malibu. Max is a very creative talented guy. He makes some of the coolest, most unique hand made leather bags, jackets, belts and sandals I have ever seen. Each peac is one of a kind and made only in Malibu, CA. Trust
me, I see them working every day in their studio garage.

I don't get to shoot product as much as I would like to but I really enjoy it. I get to work solo, use my creative ideas and rock out to music.

Max’s website is being worked on, so when its up I will make sure to show everyone the site.

Attached are some of the images we just shot for Max’s new line. The detail on the red leather jacket is a fine example to Max’s vision. Notice the curve cuts of the collar and the intricate stitching down the front.
His belts are all unique and one of a kind with each one having a distinct look and unusual looking buckles.

I am looking forward to shooting for Max again and (maybe I could trade out my shoot for the red leather jacket for my mom)
